The Experience

Diplomacy,
Staged

Model United Nations is stylized debate, and a rehearsal for the real work of diplomacy.

Participants, high school students from around the world, are each assigned a country and a committee. Their task is to represent and defend that nation’s foreign policy and interests while weighing them against the needs of the committee and the wider world. Along the way, delegates step directly into the challenges of international diplomacy, trade, and peacekeeping.

Every committee is staffed entirely by students of the University of Toronto, Canada’s most prestigious post-secondary institution, at the heart of the city. Our team is friendly, knowledgeable, and present all weekend to keep the conference running smoothly and warmly for everyone in the room.

Four Streams

A Diverse Offering,
Year After Year

UTMUN is dedicated to an innovative and diverse slate of committees. Whichever stream you choose, you will find a room built with care.

General Assemblies

Traditional procedure

Traditional UN agencies such as the UN Development Programme and the UN Environment Programme, alongside historical and conceptual councils that reach beyond the UN’s existing structures. Delegates take on issues with consequences for the whole world, which calls for careful negotiation, real collaboration, and a solid grasp of global politics.

Best for beginner and novice delegates entering Model UN.

ECOSOC & Regional Bodies

Traditional procedure

The same structure and Rules of Procedure, turned toward issues rooted in one part of the world or one community. Past rooms include the Arctic Council and the League of Arab States, plus distinctive sessions such as USSR 1991: Collapse of the Soviet Union and the International Court of Justice.

Best for students drawn to regional geopolitics.

Specialized Agencies

Procedure varies

The economic and social fallout of political decisions, staged in boardrooms and focused forums. Home to some of our most inventive committees, from GameStop versus Wall Street to the Press Corps, the Women’s NBA Board of Directors, and the occasional fictional session such as the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Best for intermediate and advanced delegates with topic expertise.

Crisis Committees

Crisis procedure

Fast-paced rooms that dig into historical moments still shaping the world today. Delegates react to updates in real time and produce actionable directives as events escalate. Past rooms include the Merchants of the Swahili Coast, the Warring States Period, and the Alliance of the Itzcoatl, plus our secretive Ad Hoc committee, revealed only on the day.

Best for intermediate and advanced delegates who love history.

Every committee is open to every delegate, whatever your experience, background, or grade level. If a committee speaks to you, register and tell us. We encourage you to follow your genuine interests.
